Luma shines
By Patricia Noonan
January 6, 2011

Luma shines; it's stylish, sophisticated, and not a single server squeeks out a "you guys" in their communications with us. How lovely, professional and simply refreshing, not hearing that ubiquitous phrase which seems to permeate every part of modern culture.

The room is open and sleek, yet there's warmth in the choice of materials, the open sunny south facing windows and the interplay of wood finishes throughout.

A recent brunch exceeded every expectation. Prompt, professional service, tabl
e request, menu advice assistance articulated, wine assistance with a wine return promptly fulfilled. And of course, with the Oliver/Bonacini professionalism, that was only the service.

The menu is short, appealing and classic, and although we ordered only three dishes, everything was delightful, delicious or as Ella Fitzgerald, jazz chanteuse would say, de-lovely.

The cocktail list is witty and fun, with drink names reflecting decades in film. From cocktails with names like The Adjuster, Some Like it Hot and the Sidecar Named Desire, I will definitely return just to imbibe at the spacious and elegant bar.

Warm Goat Cheese Salad ($8/15) leads us into the classic brunch dishes. We ask for the small order and it's delivered, split, without us having to ask... A frisee of arugula is dressed and composed over a little slab of goat cheese bedded on perfectly cooked red lentils.

The Croque Madame ($10) is delicious, the two slices of bread filled with thinly sliced ham with gruyere cheese, the meltingly lovely Mornay sauce oozing out beneath the sunny side up egg on top. We paired our dishes with Prosecco, which actually costs more per glass than the entrees.

Spaghetti Carbonara ($13) has been on the "to-eat" list for awhile and luckily for us, it's here. Little chunks of pancetta lend a smoky note to the egg and parmesan mixture bathing the strands of al dente spaghetti. A second glass of wine is ordered, the Huff Estates Chardonnay.

Slightly oxidized, we mention, and our server promptly returns with a glass poured from a freshly opened bottle. Luma is many things, all excellent, especially the service.
